I think the key here is the "local". Your box is a relay, you dont
want it it to do local delivery.
Consider looking at milters - the amavis family and mimedefang spring
to mind. And buy the Bat book!

internet using sendmail, then scans the mail for spam and forwards the
mail through SMTP to my Exchange server.
