Yup...Sendmail was already configured to use procmail as the local
delivery agent...calling it, again, via the .forward file, was confusing
the issue.

Is procmail your local delivery agent (LDA)? ala:
$ grep ^Mlocal sendmail.cf
Mlocal, P=/usr/bin/procmail, F=lsDFMAw5:/|@qSPfhn9,
