I've just tested this new device using
smartmontools -d sat -a /dev/sdf
and I got all the S.M.A.R.T. data

this device:
USB ID: 0411:01ea
Buffalo
External Hard Drive HD-LBU2
seems to work ok with "smartctl -d sat".
The USB2 bridge seems to be a Medialogic MLDU11 (the largest chip on
the board has this label).
