I had the same issue but discovered screen 5.0.0 is not even able to read an
empty screenrc, see this bug (https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?66158) I
submitted. Maybe that's the real issue?

[http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/screen-5.0.0.tar.gz.sig the newest version],
unpacked it, ./configure, make, make install.
$ ~/.local/bin/screen --version
Screen version 5.0.0 (build on 2024-10-04 17:10:28)
