I'd like to start working on some of the
bugs to help get the next release out, but
I think there is quite a bit of basic cleanup
that needs to be done in the code base. As
a step towards that, here are a few patches.
(They have little or nothing to do with
cleaning up the code, though.)

Here's a "janitorial" patch of the type I
mentioned in my last mail. A few questions:
Is it necessary to continue using old K&R style
parameter declarations?
Would there be any problems dumping the
obsolete Makefile.in's and using Automake?
I notice there is neither a 'check' nor
a 'test' tar
