This is my $PS1:
\[\ek\e\\\]\[...@\h[\#]\w;\e\\\]${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}...@\h[\#]:\w\$
I use a freshly cloned screen.
I have figured out the issue.
Adding this to screenrc:
bind c screen bash
caused new windows to exhibt this strange behavior.
