from the PC through the DTR and RTS wire? Thought there's also a Vcc wire. Or
doesn't the Vcc deliver enough power?

If you have never allowed the inline battery to charge up I would
recommend doing that. You can do this under Linux by using the charger
utility that I provide. Are these long commands ( ie: >= 32 bytes ) that
you are trying to send or receive ?
