Ok, so I just grabbed cvs-1.11.20, compiled it from source (no binary release) and issued: /usr/src/cvs-1.11.20/src/cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/sources/emacs co emacs It works. So I'm not able to reproduce your problem. Maybe you can check with the CVS people at [EMAIL PROTECTED], though

I can't say I have any idea why (the file in question contains no non-ASCII characters, for instance), but the file lisp/net/rcirc.el in Emacs CVS HEAD seems to hang my cvs update attempts. At some point there may have been an update to it that hung -- I'm not sure. But I removed the file locally
