another update. I downloaded and compiled the backend:
new sane-find-scanner -v -v:
This is sane-find-scanner from sane-backends 1.0.21
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered
I will upgrade the backend. Wonder why my debian repositroy supplied
such an old package.
I would make you a log of the scanner, if you advise me how to.

Some points/questions-
1. This version of sane-backends is ancient, I recommend an upgrade.
2. It appears that this scanner (and it's Lexmark version) is not
currently supported
3. Perhaps you can get a log of this machine scanning under windows?
Stef might be able to determine if it compatible wi
Oh I see. sorry for beeing so naive.
here is the output:
This is sane-find-scanner from sane-backends 1.0.19
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the

found USB scanner (vendor=0x413c [Language Error], product=0x5115
[Language Error]) at libusb:002:022
and sanimage -L putts out
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something
thanks. I tried to enable the lexmark backend, but I guess the device
poses a more basic problem to me:
it does not show up in lsusb or proc/bus/usb/devices at all. and
sane-find-scanner does not see it.
what could I do?

Just because the device is made by Lexmark does not mean it will be
supported by the lexmark sane backend. What does
sane-find-scanner -v -v
report?
