well, you can make it possible to scan as a non-root user by adjusting
the permissions on the usb device file. unfortunately, this file gets
recreated everytime the machine or the scanner reb

I ran the command and it worked but this appeared in the terminal
window. Should I worry about the bash error?

I ran /sane-find-scanner -q and now realise that the Visioneer XP 450
does not have the gt6801 or 6816 chip. I have a printer that also has a
combined scanner and it was that which was giving the results so powered
it off.
Xsane /run with only the visioneer scanner reports No devices available.
ok- as we covered recently, you have to upgrade the avision backend
with the one from rene's site. this will involve:
1. downloading and extracting the sane source code
2. downloading and possibly extracting rene's updated files
3. replacing some files in the sane tarball with those from rene
