I did contact the hplip-mailinglist and the problem of scanning in lineart
mode has been confirmed as a bug.

Thank you for the information. I have the latest version (compiled from
source) of HPLIP and Sane is 1.0.15 (the version that comes with
Linspire). I do not really want to try to uninstall this version (or
install the later version) in case Linspire does not operate properly.
