Maybe you already found out, but the data produced is a png file. The
web, gimp and xview have no problem viewing it.
Simply redirect: % scanimage ... > image.png

Before i tried your suggestion xsane was as dead as a dodo.
scanimage > image.pnm simply placed a lineart image into
my /home/'username' directory which i simply checked with the GIMP image
editor
Thinking using a text based application like scanimage was not really my
idea of a final s

Hi David,
does this happen as root, too? If not, I bet the permissions are not set
accordingly. Please test and report back. Even a "ls -l /dev/sg2" could be of
help.
