sane 1.0.19 is ancient. Build a current git snapshot, or wait a few
days for the release of 1.0.21.

here is the output of
SANE_DEBUG_EPSON2=255 scanimage -L 2>cx5000.log
with only epson2 in dll.config
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of epson2 to 255.
[epson2] sane_epson2_init: sane-backends 1.0.19
[epson2] sane_epson2_init: reading config file, epson2.conf
[epson2] scsi EPSON
[epson2] usb
does it work as root? is epson or epson2 enabled in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf?

Yes, the chart says it should work, but it doesn't! xsane says no
scanner found, so what can I do to make xsane find it? (and yes, I user
is in scanner group)

This scanner is listed as having good support by the epson and epson2
backends from sane-backends 1.0.20. Strangely, it is missing from
epkowa and from the development version of epson2 (probably a .desc
file error).
What version of sane-backends are you running, and is epson2 (or
epson) enabled i
I was given an Epson CX5000 3-in-1 unit and I am only interested in
getting scanner section working, I have a laser and refuse to pay the
ink tax. It works under Windoze.
I hook it up and start xsane which says no devices found and scanimage
-L reports the same thing. But, lsusb reports:
