I build sane-backends new from cvs (1.0.16).
# the snapascn backend test:
$ export SANE_DEBUG_S

or
$export SANE_DEBUG_EPKOWA=128;
and then run the scanimage. set the debug for whichever backend you are using.
We will know where the segmentation fault is.
