I did contact the hplip-mailinglist and the problem of scanning in lineart
mode has been confirmed as a bug.

As far as I can tell (being a novice) the setup is as before I reinstalled
Linspire and when it all worked correctly.

Hmmm, maybe you could tell us which scanner/backend you're using?

Using scanimage(sane-backends) 1.0.15; bankend version 10.0.15)
In --mode Lineart i get the follloiwng error message: "sane_read: Error
during device I/O".
Other modes (Color, Grayscale) do not cause this problem.
Any help with this would be gratefully received.
