The command xsane by user tom results in a segmentation fault.
The commands xsane -V and xsane -s by user tom run to completion. The
image file produced by xsane -s can be opened and edited by gimp.
If, when xsane -V has opened the xsane window, the choice

In my home directory there is a subdirectory .sane containing two
further subdirectoris, xsane containing the file xsane.rc and xscanimage
containing the file xscanimage.rc.
I did not create these files and find their contents odd.
Can, should I delete them? If not, are there instructions for ed

Both these programs will not fail when

Xsane color scans from my Epson Perfection 2400 scanner with a usb
connection fail after one or two scans. The scanner suddenly stalls in
mid-scan. The backend maintainer advised:

It's very unlikely that a change in the backend caused that problem. The

A binary scan works but the scanner hangs up when making a gray or color

I have had my Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner for several years and
until today it has always worked perfectly with xsane.
My system is Debian Testing with 2.6.16 kernel. I have run apt-get

My box is Debian Etch. After the recent dist-upgrade xsane copy showed
only "new printer" and lpr for the command. This works but I want to
print to a second printer attached to a Debian Sarge box on the LAN.
Both boxes use CUPS and from a console I can print to my printer with
the command lp

Xsane (Version 0.97 installed on a stable (Sarge) Debian box with
apt-get) works beautifully with my Epson USB scanner and printer.
My only problem is in trying to email an image. I have entered the mail
