Mike -- Have been using the HP ScanJet 5590 USB scanner using the
packaged version of sane and gscan2pdf in 64-bit Ubuntu in 12.04, 12.10,
and 13.04 without issue. 'Works fine here'...
With the scanner plugged in and powered up, what do 'lsusb | grep -i
scanner' and 'sane-find-scanner' give you?

As a follow up, I opened up the scanner today to find the PCB and take
photographs of what I found. I've uploaded the pics to Picasa, primarily
showing a large chip in the centre of the PCB with the text 'Avision
C7C' on it.

1.startup - capture taken during initial contact to scanner by Windows'
scanner application
2.get_preview - capture taken during preview image scan
3.final - capture taken during the final scan for export
