Thanks all for replying.
I need something which is cheap and portable (easily packs in a small bag), so
thinking of simply mounting the camera on a small tripod and then placing the
document in front of it using a document holder. These two together shouldn't
cost more than 5$.

Hi All,
I'm thinking of using a digital camera as a scanner. Are there applications
like these for linux:

Hi All,
I"m looking for a portable scanner (that is, which fits in a small bag).? There
is a class of scanners called `orbital' or `planetary' scanners, which are
basically a digital camera mounted a pedestal. You place the document on a flat

Thanks for all the replies regarding running a scanner's Windows software.

How does it work with the vmware/virtualbox? do these applications create a
window (for example in Gnome) which is a `virtual windows machine' (looks like
a windows desktop) and I can run the scanner application in there
Hi All,
I plan to purchase a scanner which is not yet supported but SANE but it will be
supplied with a Windows scanning application.
Is it possible to run such an application under an Windows emulator like wine
(until SANE supports the scanner)? has anyone actually done this?.
Thanks,
Mike.

If you could get a log of a small, low resolution scan on windows, I can see if
it uses the same protocol as other Canon DR series machines. If you are lucky,

Dear All,
I consider buying a portable scanner, such as the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 or
Pentax DSmobile 600. I would mainly use it for scanning documents (text).
Would appreciate feedback from users how well these and other portable scanners
perform under SANE, as well as any other helpful tips yo
Hi Philipp,
Yep, the bug seems similar to what I've experienced. The 600dpi also works but
1200 gives only half a page :(.
Anyway, I can now scan documents and produce reasonable b/w scans, so that's
OK. Hopefully SANE supports for the Scanjet 4400c will improve soon.
Thanks for your help in i
Dear SANE users,
Thanks for Wolfran and Triften for helpful suggestions? regarding the HP
Scanjet 4400c.
With the rts8891 backend it is now working but apparently only in 75, 300 and
600 dpi modes. The default mode of 150 dpi? produces a blank image while the
1200dpi mode produces only half of

HI Wolfram,
Thanks for replying. I've installed SANE about two weeks ago by downloading the

This is a recent SANE version (1.0.20.1). Is this version broken? everything
seems to work fine (except that it generates blank images).
Are there any tweaks/
