/usr/lib/sane providing I use appropriate arguments in my scanimage command? By the way, I did not include attachments for the image files produced by the debug script (That would have made for an even bigger message.) but I can report that the image is still totally black. Still trying for colour: This time, after --help, I tried the command: scanimage --format=pnm --mode col > img3.pnm a few times. Sometimes it made a bad noise so I did not wish to try too often. Sometimes it gave an error message. (I dont recall it exactly but it complained of bad input. and on

Thanks, Alexey for the PPA. I tried both scanimage > file.pnp and scanimage > file.ppm. In both cases it produced a greyscale image of good definition but my source was in colour! Also, both times on the return traverse it seemed to get stuck for a few seconds while making a noise and then I have
