I noticed there's no timeout handling
on the function in subject and the system timeout
seems to be very long.
anyone feels it's needed? I might eventually add it

Before you return the scanner could you run:
$sane-find-scanner -v -v
and post the output here?

This device is only supported in the development version of the SANE
backends. It is not supported in sane-backends-1.0.20.
