Wow! It work like a charm, and Kooka is a wonderfully intuitive application!
The four steps suggested by Allan made it! I had in fact unplugged the
terminator and wouldn't have thought of it otherwise.
Anyhow, my family thinks I'm a great guru now! ;)

If the line "option disable-calibration" in the avision.conf is commented
out the scanner works after doing:
scanimage -d avision >t.pnm (closed Door, no Tray)
scanimage -d avision --frame 1 --resolution 1200 >bild.pnm (open door,
tray with negatives)
