no replies neither to private emails, neither in this list.
I even checked that his last commit is dated january 2003, so I am
wondering if he is still working at this project.

Alright. The problem was in missing usb interface module in modprobe.conf.
Now I'm having another problem - all the scans are too dark. I've
tried gamma and brightness correction but it didn't help
