Software. I downloaded the demo version, and did a quick test on Suse
9.1. I veryfied that it loaded and scanned a document from the ADF on
Epson Perfection 1640SU Office.

http://hpoj.sourceforge.net should lead you in the right direction -
using hpoj as a front-end to sane (http://www.sane-project.org) should
yield some positive results. If your friend has email, she should
