I have the same scanner. The lamp turns off after ca. 15 minutes. I'm using RH
8.0, sane-backends 1.0.12 and xsane 0.91. Maybe it's a hardware problem?

reviewed the 1650 and says it goes off after idling 15 minutes. But I
bet he's on windows, is it possible the linux usb
code does something different so that it stays on? I'm sure mine
stays on beyond 15 minute
