thanks, it works. The Sane-backend-tree compiles again without modifications.

Hi
I updated from December cvs to 1.0.10-pre1. In sanei_usb.c lines 546
to 572 there's some new code 'Set alternative setting'. My canon 1240
has one interface and libusb returns an error for
usb_set_altinterface() and scanimage stops.

does this mean that I can't use 1.0.10, I haven't yet installed Linux on
this machine and I won't do it until I am sure all my devices will work

The Canon-SCSI backend has not changed much from sane-1.0.9 to 1.0.10.
Chances are quite good that your scanner will work with either version.

I made the following query:
http://sane.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=Canon&model=&bus=scsi
but it doesn't have anything about IX4025

I have a Canon IX4025 scanner with SCSI interface, I searched the device
list at the website but didn't find any backend for that scanner.
Can I still use it on Linux ?
The Canon-SCSI backend lists the IX-4025 among the recognized scanners.
Please give it a try.
