I got an inquiry about support for the HP5400 type of scanners.
(because I'm writing a backend for 'niash' chip scanners; the
HP5400 contains a niash00033 chip).
I have a USB snoopy log of the activity after plugging in the
scanner under Windows. The USB transfer protocol seems completely

Yes. The avision backend in the last official SANE release has some
problems with the USB scanners.

Nice that the scanner works so far. In some hours I'm off for a two
week holiday trip. When I'm back, ADF should be an one afternoon issue
as long as the scanner uses the commands described in my Avision SCSI
spec.
I hope you can wait two weeks ...
