Hello,
detected that xsane has a bug when saving a image with more than
8 bits per pixel.
The patch
http://www.ciselant.de/projects/xsane_dev/patch-xsane-0.86-save-as-jpg-0.1
converts the pixel data to 8 bit values before calling the jpeg library.

It is orange only after inversion, the negative mask is purple, and
you can clearly see that on the negative.
If I ever get to scan a colour negative, I might look into

Colour negatives need special treatment in software to eliminate the
orange mask. I don't know what xsane does in this area, but I guess it
cannot b

I have a brand new[*] Nikon CoolScan III (aka LS 30)
I re-built and installed sane from the source, using
sane-backends-1.0.7-cvs-2002-05-02 and
sane-frontends-1.0.7-cvs-2002-05-02 on my Linux PPC system
