There is a cython script for the example given in the gsl document.
The file is examples/gsl/examples/monte.pyx in the sage package.
Looking at this example is quite instructive.

OK, I think Fedora 12 has the latest gcc and g++ but I don't know about
gfortran.

you could also check out reduce[1] with the redten[2] package, which
worked very well and fast(!) for me, not comparable to the Maple tensor
package.

There is also a tensor package in FriCAS (which is available in Sage
optionally), but I know nothing about it...
