Yes, you are right. I first noticed it in 4.1.1 but did not actually
try to use the notebook much in that version.
How does opening a new tab prevent "massive corruption"? I never
noticed any massive corruption in the notebook in versions previous to
4.1.1 and I am pretty sure I did occasionally
