Sorry for the late report but sage finally compiles and runs on ubuntu karmic.
sage -testall passes except for
sage -t "devel/sage/sage/server/simple/twist.py"
However, re-runnig this test, I got an "All tests passed!", so
it looks like there are no problems now with ubuntu 9.10.
