Linearly increasing the lift values does not work. I can find a relatively small example (81 vertices in 4 dimensions) where your patch fails. For higher dimensions I think using lrs is really the way to go, since adding it has other advantages as well. When I have a little time I will try to w

I think the best solution, if possible, is to re-adjust the paths to remove macports/fink to build. However, as a short term solution, rather than just killing the build, maybe it should be a prompt warning the user that it might be a problem, and asking if they want to continue anyways. I
