I've downloaded the lipo'd rsync-3.0.0 OS X binary you kindly posted and
used it successfully on a 10.4.11 G5, but am running into trouble using it
on a 10.4.8 G4. When running the command:
rsync -axXSHAv --delete --force-change --exclude-from ~/exclude.txt /

I got some more verbosity on the broken pipe (see below.) We ran the
compiled rsync on three machines. The leopard one worked, the Tiger
PPC Mac worked but this one, the Tiger Intel Mac, generates this error
on the same folder. I compiled the rsync3.0pre9 on my Tiger PPC

Oops, sorry - this was a stupid beginner's mistake.
Just found out that when I was issuing the commands I never had the target disk
mounted, so the copied files went to the mount directory on the root filesystem
instead, where there was not enough space - ouch :(
