The rsync version was 2.6.6, but I was never able to
get the patch to work. However, I got a link to a
pre-patched version and I was able to get it
installed.

You don't mention what rsync version you're trying to patch. The
diff included in the 2.6.6 release applies cleanly, as does the diff
in the latest "nightly" ta
