I compiled the current git version and now it's working fine. Btw I
also had to install some dependencies that weren't requested/installed
with the previous binary installation so it might be that it was these
not making rhythmbox play.

Renato,
It makes things a lot easier if you write the output to a file when
displaying the full debug info. Try running: rhythmbox -d 2>
rb-debug.log. All output will then end up in the file rb-debug.log.

wow, that's a lot of ouput! After the database checking finished, i
pushed play and as soon as i could i killed the process from the
terminal. here's the output
$ rhythmbox -d
[..database checking..]
