I've narrowed down the problem to what I think is a bug in pdfinfo in
poppler-utils:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=951216
Which also led me to a workaround (i.e. using pdfinfo with -isodates or
-rawdates).
