important fix, but assuming there isn't any big issue, is there a general
need for an 23.08.5 release (some time in January)?

As you mentioned, it's hard to predict what will happen, so I think
it's fine to do releases as is needed. If a serious bug-fix lands, it
can be discussed at that time and a release made if necessary.
