Probably that's not necessary. In my experience, it always gets remounted rw
for single-user mode.

If you haven't set passwd for linux single usermode, then at lilo prompt
enter linux single press enter, this will take you into single user mode ,
there you just type passwd and change the root passwd,
lilo:linux single
