I expect the problem is related to your hardware. There is a known bug associated with previous versions of RH7.x that has to do with Cable select settings for cdroms. This is a jumper setting on the cdrom itself. If your cdrom is using cable select change this to the manual setting of master o

Hello, I reported the major bug in tar over a year ago. Since then we have been unable to use RedHat's tar to back up our systems and have had to revert to the standard Gnu release of tar. Is there any news on when this bug will be fixed ? Who is responsible for tar ? The Gnu tar is version 1.1
