You might want to check your early Home Powers. We went thorough that dance in
1989 or so. It's ugly and the spent electrolyte is serious toxic waste.

Jay,
I second Bob-O's comment - completely.
I inherited a number of pocket-plate ni-cad cells in the early 90s
and went through the same exercise as Richard Perez -- including
the same bad words he used (maybe more).
If the cells are truly diminished in capacity, recycle them. The

Hi Jesse,
If I read this correctly your customer is wanting to go off-grid during peak
hours. I recently went through this same thing with a customer. I received
feedback from an old SMA tech and some Wrenchers (thread titled "Battery
Back-up and Grid Tie"). Here's what I learned:

HI Dan and Bob-O,
I totally agree with you both.
But as you guys both know, some folks really wont take no for an answer.
This person has the money and talent to do this, and he really wants to,
just trying to get him the correct info rather than some garbage off the WWW.
thanks,

Very good numbers. I've found their monthly "enlightener" that they send with
each bill on line and found this interesting tidbit.

Southern California Edison (SCE) is now denying applications for
interconnection and net metering IF the system can charge batteries by using
grid power. It looks like they are worried about people using time-of-use
metering in this way.
I think it's completely bogus, not only because of the qu
Hi Jesse,
If the customer wants PV with battery storage capability, this can
certainly reduce their utility bill. I agree that just charging off the
grid
during non-peak hours would not be very efficient, but when you add solar
energy with storage to the equation, this can make a difference.

I agree as well, but this is going to be installed at the CO-OPs main office
and be an example system for their customers to get info on solar. Paying the
little we pay for electricity, none of their customers will end up with a
system of this type, 95% of the time they just grid-tie. A system
Jesse,
Trust your instinct. It's the best tool you've got.

Hi Jay, I had a set of NiCd's once and asked the list for the same
instructions as you have done. It was an interesting exercise but I
wouldn't go through the hassle again as the hardest part was safely
disposing of the old electrolyte, and is your customer as careful about that
as you would be.
