The Franklin with capacitor Jbox at top of well helps with the surge. It
is not what you would call soft start!
An ammeter (or a loud generator) on a soft start pump will tell you what
you have. A nice slow over 10 seconds ramping up of amps or gen noise
when the pump is energized. You won't
I have off grid customers where I have them install 1/2 HP pump, also
Franklin soft start seems to help, low cost but I do not know how it works,
it has a start capacitor I think.

Look at a variable speed pump from Grundfos. Not as many choices for
large pumping apps.
The SQ Flex pump is basically a VFD when used with the controller. It
can direct run from solar which tells
you there is no surge. Even the SQ pump without the controller will soft
start and should work
For high surge and unbalanced splitphase loads, you can’t beat a Midnite
Solar Rosie Inverter. It uses Sic FET’s and is rock solid. I have an early
unit and it’s starts my 5hp compressor and still runs other loads without a
flicker.
Runs loads that even my Schneider XW+ would not. Why complicate
Interesting the variation in experiences. Most of my jobs are off-grid
these days which almost always means a (reliable) well pump need. I'd
entertain the idea of 3-phase with VFD but that's quite a bit more
initial expense for this customer and possible higher long term costs
with the VFD eq
Hi Bill,
I have yet to have an issue with the Sol Ark 12K and water pumps. We have
numerous off-grid installations with 3/4 HP well pumps with no issues. I
tend to find that compressors and inductive motor loads like chop saws are
often an issue.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Chris, wrenches
I have a few off grid or very close to off grid, I run well pumps, booster
pumps, septic system pumps, no issues
Fun times

Based on the youtube video of the Sol Ark vs Schneider, I would never promise a
customer it would reliably start up a motor load...-GlennSent from my

I’d look at a 3 phase pump with vfd/soft start control and eliminate the start
surge.
