I had a very well vented automotive battery explode. The cause was apparently an internal short. The explosion broke the case and splattered me with acid. I was lucky and not injured. I think the internal short rapidly vaporized the acid and the explosion was essentially due to steam press

These descriptions of battery explosions certainly drive home the point that one should always always wear protective gear when working on batteries. I have a story that may take the prize for the most foolish behavior yet described (thankfully I wasn't involved until the cleanup stage).
