Hi Bill and all,
I've been searching for an alternative to plastic wire ties for some
time as I'm not sure they are going to hold up over the system life
of 20-30+ years and it'll be an ugly site to have all those wires
drop onto the roof.
But for a flush rooftop array, an assumption to repl
Bill,
I am more in your camp. SS ties look like cutting knifes to me.
A lot of the worry over plastic comes from the folks in New Mexico. What
they have there is a "parching" environment more that trouble with UV.
I use the Panduit cable tie with the "-120" suffix, weather resistant nylon

Hi Bill,
I have seen some real problems too but they have lots of uses beyond
just supporting wires.
Thanks,

Folks,
I'm a bit sour on SS ties. These are easy to overtighten and have caused
numerous ground faults in the field. My recommendation is to use
UV-resistant black wire ties and install 2-3 times as many as necessary.
Sure some will fail over time, but we are much less likely to have ground
faults
Esteemed colleagues,
Having just hired a licensed electrician for our renewable energy company we
find that he cannot use our liability insurance to cover him on pulling
electrical permits here in Massachusetts. It seems that he has to have his
own certificate despite being listed as an electr
We end up doing a lot of off grid rewires, and one thing we do when
combining new and old modules is to use 2 controllers.
We'll put the odd, old mismatched stuff on a used C40, and put the
new modules on the MX60.
Every salvage module in the world has ended up here in Taos, and many

Hello Allan,
We run into the same problem when adding PV's to older off grid
systems. I am pretty excited about the 200 watt Evergreen ES-A. WIth
a Voc of 22.5 and Vmp of 18.1, it seems like the closest to an "off
grid" 12 volt module out there.

The MPPT controllers have revolutionized how we can do off grid systems.
Wider panel choices and greatly reduced wire cost. Have you ever run or
remember running 600 watts (or more) of 12 volt panels 150' or so? It was
going to take 4 huge wires to counter the voltage drop or move the building

Hi Peter, Darryl, Dean, et al,
You have good info in searching for a tankless machine that is a temperature
modulated machine. In the old days of only natural draft tankless you could
choose between flow modulated and temperature modulated (and perhaps other
mechanisms of which I am not aware)
Module Voltage Question for Off-Grid DesignersFor larger off grid systems -
pretty much anything over 600 watts - we have been recommending only MPPT type
controllers, such as the Outback & Xantrex. Since they can match almost any
panel size to any battery size, it has reduced our dependence on
