i've had great luck with Compass / Rene Herse standard casing tires- not
quite as fragile as EL's and still very supple/fast. i have the snoqualmie
pass on my sam and the antelope hill on my clem L. very spoiled. honorable
mentions for other tires= WTB, Schwalbe as obvious choices. The schwalbe
i have the Sam and do find it to be stiff and it rides like a touring bike.
i'd think the homer might be more appropriate for a brevet or something
with less of a load. what size do you ride and where are you located? if in
the bay area you can ride my 58 canti sam.

IME oven cleaner was not strong enough to remove the black finish from a
Raceface chainring, so someone recommended lye, which is serious stuff. I
never ended up buying/using lye, but it's probably a strong bet to remove a
finish from an anodized part.

I think they should widen the tire clearance on a Homer, but keep the
lighter tube spec. This would be an all-day rider (not a tourer) but with
2.2" clearance for extreme fire roads and easier single track, a la Crust
Bombora or Black Mtn Cycles monster cross. Perfect bike for a mixed terrain

i really like this tire. i, too, had the 700x45 version and used them on my
black mountain cycles MC and then my Sam Hillborne. they roll fast but
still offer great traction in dry dirt (both loose & hardpack) conditions.
two things to note based on my experience:
1. the center tread wears quic
i concur that the clem L feels light for what it is. i think because it
lacks a top tube it gives up a bit more flex which makes pedaling easier.

i have a wide low double sugino crank from rivendell with the tiny inner
ring, and bashguard instead of a big/outer ring. having that small gear is
really nice. but i do ride up a lot of hills living in san francisco.. .
IME anything "-moose" is triangulated and therefore stiffer (can equate to
harsher riding); the benefit is it's more rugged for heavy duty riding and
stiffer (if you are a bigger rider with a heavy pedal this can be a pro).
one other benefit of "-moose" is your bars will never slip down.

recently i sold my too-small 56cm a homer hilsen, and have been looking to
replace it with something similar, but larger, so that less seatpost shows
and it fits a bit more traditionally/rando-y. i contacted a seller on ebay
about his 60cm rambo and he agreed to sell to me as a frameset

check out A Homer Hilsen, for sure!! I had one and it was the perfect
