As Ben noted, cloth and twine is "bulletproof" chain stay protection. One
caveat though: if you ever decide to remove it, the adhesive quality of
cloth hbar tape has the ability to remove paint (ask me how I know!). Riv

Has anyone ever repaired an old old B-17 with a tear in the leather? After
sitting for nearly 20 years, I took my fathers old Brooks from 1975, threw some
Proofide on it and began using it. Unfortunately it was still totally dried out

One other observation. My Sam and Atlantis from 2014-15 came with clear
chain stay protectors. Formerly standard equipment but now an option.

My experience is just like Laing's, the whole chainstay is wrapped and I
didn't notice for months.
What I believe Grant means by "slap guard" is those old timey braze-ons
touring bikes used to have that you would stretch a piece of leather
between. He's not a stickler for paint staying
And did you need any friction paste or Loctite in the bar clamp?

Paint around the head lugs looks a little rough, like some sort of rust
bloom or something..color looks meh because of dust and discoloration, but
probably nice in 2005...and that dark roast coffee color just screams for

I found that a single bolt dirt drip stem holds okay, I mounted it on a 4 bolt
stem it felt more secure, yet to be field tested.

My Clem came with a single layer of clear material protection. Hard to see but
it is there. Seems inadequate though? That is a long chain & I imagine it might
sag quite a bit at times. In addition the cable running below the stay nearly
hugs the stay. On other bikes I have experience paint scuff
