Paul, this is a great post, and dead useful to me. Something obvious you said
that I hadn’t thought about: I’m putting a lot of miles on only 2 bikes and it
means quicker wear, etc. I expect consistency because my Rivendells always give
it, and I forget to consider wear until things get way out
I tried a direct email on this but am not sure if it went through. A PM through
the web interface has me stumped so...I’ll take this if available.

Sorry to post to the whole list, but William if you didn't get my reply,

Leah, good for you. Congratulations on all those miles!
Rivendells have long been billed as versatile bikes. The smile on your face
while hoisting your 30ish lb. Platypus and Clem tells me you don't have to
just ride 'em to stay fit:-)

Congrats! I'll view the vid given the opportunity. My yearly total was no

noticed any difference when you coast b/t the Clem and the Platypus? I

I'm not very good about the safety checks, either, and need to start doing
the routine Paul laid out. Racks and fenders are especially prone to their
bolts working loose, and I always find out after they've rattled for a week

Gosh, this is a good question, and one I’ve actually never considered. I
think I’d have to say the Platypus is faster and coasts longer. I’d even
say it feels faster downhill, but I wouldn’t swear to it. I’m heading out
after the next load of laundry and I’ll see how long the thing coasts...

Yes. The impracticality starts to come back though, when, after the second
bike, you convince yourself you need a third, then a fourth, fifth, six,
etc. Now no matter how simple the setup, you are in for some maintenance...

Hehe, I think a lot of us have been down this path with a new Riv. That's
certainly where my very light and zippy custom started, but now I've just
picked up a nice non-grid gray
Leah,
You are a MACHINE! I love this post and find it very inspiring. So much so,
that I'm going to resolve to ride 2021 miles in 2021...and hopefully I'll
get there early like you and can try for more.
Loved the video on IG, too!

Mark, you were under the impression because you voted for and coined the term

Thanks, Rich! Lifting these Rivs does a body good. I am convinced any upper
body strength I have is lifting my bikes or pulling hard on the bars up
hills. I love it; it feels so good.
Ben - you can do it! And you’ll get there quick, I’m sure. Maybe you can
reward yourself with a new Platypus? 😬
The wheelbase ought not to make any difference to how the bike coasts. For
a bike with freewheel, tires, wind resistance (and therefore position), and
friction, bearing or rubbing, are the agents. You might check to see if
something is rubbing or if your wheel bearings are binding slightly (top

Finishing out my garage has prompted me to (a) be content with my bikes and

Interested in the fenders and leather mudflaps, what size are the fenders

These claims may or may not be accurate, hard to say, you decide!
But that Gus is designed for really-big tires run at low pressure and I
suspect your bike came with them. They will slow down faster - go fast
shorter? - while coasting than thinner tires at higher pressure. True fact.

Leah,
Glad you were able to process and determine a compromise that best meets
your “initial needs” regarding support light rack and saddle bag for the
Platypus. Like all relationships you and the Rowdy Platypus will feel each

I've signed up for a Riv in-stock notification for a while now - thinking
it'll be quite a bit longer for these to come back in stock, or maybe they
won't at all.
So, wondering if anyone has one of these rack's they'd be interested in
selling. It would finish off my Clem nicely.
Thanks,
David
Sam,
I don't have fenders listed here (just a fender reinforcement) - though I
do have a couple pair of SKS fenders that need new homes...
