No doubt the quality of Paul brakes is top-notch, but, why would Tektros
not last as long as Paul brakes? Is there something about the
material/aluminum used, or the design? Also, in what way are Tektros
more difficult to set up than other cantilever brakes? In my experience,

Yeah .. there's no evidence that the Tekrto won't last as long as any other
brake. I'm still using a Shimano BR-MC70 wide profile cantilever from the
early 80's. Hardly pretty or fancy, they just continue to work well and
will as long I'm alive:) Setting up any and every canti is an art form
rperks is probably right-but it's hard to say which color to use,
without high-resolution, pornographic photos of the bike posing

possible, though classic nude would do just fine)

While the hanger for the Tektro brake is pretty, it is considerably fussier
to work with. Tektros are more difficult to center and fine tune. I first
tried disassembling and trying different holes but ultimately ended up
bending the spring and offsetting the hanger. I don't believe the Tektro
LOL, thanks for the laugh this morning, i still need to do some
sanding on the wood grips before i refinish them, but once i'm ready
i'll come back with a few pictures for input--however i threw away my
last glue-on moustache recently.

I've had good luck with BR-R550s with switching out the wide washer on the
inside with the thinner washer from the outside (as per shimano's
instructions) so the pads arent so close to the rim...and then pulling the
brake cable down until the levers feel smooth and even...and the brake

Hi Minh,
I just wrapped the bars on my green Quickbeam with green Newbaum's
(and black). I like it. The other Newbaum's tape I've used has faded
rapidly (in days), so I might shellac for UV protection, but I'm not a
fan of the feel of it either.

I used my first purchase 5% discount. I made it a big one, to save a lot
and to get free shipping. But it kind of slipped my mind that sales tax in
CA is more than 5% (a lot more). Does this make me a teapartier? Am I a
libertarian without knowing it?

By law, in states that have sales tax, or at least in Minnesota, residents
are required to claim their untaxed out-of-state mail order purchases (or

Sales tax generally bothers me not at all and does not deter me from buying
locally. I don't understand the excessive anger about such taxes, in the US we
pay far less tax than in most of the rest of the developed world (and in the
undeveloped world, things usually operate by bribes which will
I'm good with all sales taxes and I love living in the US. I can think

It's simply the cost being alive :) hence it's called "cost of

Yeah, I'm over it. My temporary dislike for paying sales tax was
over-ruled by my never-ending like of opening a box from Rivendell. Nitto

Ha! It's true- and for me much of the entertainment is seeing how they got all

I'm with you on that. But in that department, this particular packaging
was way below standard. The box was much larger than necessary. Maybe I
should have photographed it before I broke it down. You know how all of us
have gotten Riv packages and immediately assumed "It *CANT* all be in

Well, they do have at least one new person in packing. (remember the

Also don't mind the sales tax, but do realize that every area is
different,. While not an issue in the Twin Cities up in Duluth, MN
there are added taxes that do make me think once or twice before

Pete,
Not directly answering your question, but a couple of mechanic's
troubleshooting tips. Are you you 100% positive that it is the caliper
itself? Sometimes the ends of the canti bosses get a little bit of flare,
and a high quality (one with tight tolerances, little play) caliper will
