Hey Frank,
Cool to hear your ten-year-old is doing the ride this year! Impressive.
I bailed on the STP this year. Not enough time to train--my longest ride so
far this year has been the ~25 miles of the Riv Ride New Year's Day! Ah
well. Next year!
Have an awesome rest of the ride.

Yes Geoff, That helps!
IRD uses Tange specs, but even the Shimano is very very close specs.
As of last year, Riv told me they use only Tange. BTW, the only
difference between a 107 and 110 Tange/IRD is on the left, non drive
side. The Drive side length is the same.

Outstanding! I routinely have similar outings, and refer to them as
micro-tours. Here's a tongue-in-cheek tutorial...

I don't have one but wonder, would a Roadeo work for you?
How fatty do you need those fatties to be?

When I was building up my Bombadil last summer, I asked Mark about it, and
he said they use 107 on every bike.
Sometimes I think Riv should do a promotion for having the community update
their aging webpage content, but that would be a bear to manage.

Yes, Roadeo might work, though I might prefer the higher BB and
sloping TT of a cross-style frame. Probably not a make or break.

Yes indeed! One wonders whether actual toasting is practical with the Trangia
kit I have.
This requires careful planning and iterative execution!

I spent a lot of time considering the 56 2TT Sam. Ended up with a
lightly used single TT which allowed me to improve the drivetrain. For
the 56 the double seems ok. It gives you a great place to stash a
pump. I do a fair amount of pubic transit with the bike so having a

There used to be reflective stickers you could put on your rims, back in the

This reflective paint is the way of the future.
A year ago I was talking with a fellow SF randonneur about reflective paint

I hope this is the start of that.

I have done the conversion from my 56cm Atlantis. I think it works
well and have kept the bike that way. The Tektro Oryx brakes are the
lowest-cost canti brake that I know will have enough upward pad travel
to meet a 584 rim, and that is what I started with. I later converted
the bike to a linear b

Hi Garth,
Glad I could be of some help.
I do vaguely recall that one of the Riv guys mentioned only using Tange in
their standard buildups, but I guess they list Tange-Shimano-IRD on the
invoice, so that it's to the customer's understanding that they could go
with one of the other listed manuf
The issue of double top tubes is an interesting one, and I'm not sure how it
will play out over time. Visually, they add a certain robustness to my eye,
and functionally, I'm cerainly prepared to take Grant's ideas on faith.
I'll add a couple of other thoughts.
The first is that I think the idea

Ok so there was only one Edelux using three watt bulbs and qevidently many are
stamped with 2.4 watt.
All three of mine are marked 2.4.
Doesn't matter I love them. Even sold an e3 triple for just enough to buy
another one. Love that light.

Good timing with this post! We must have been channeling this article in the 3-speed River and Sea ride today. (See previous postings.) We did 35 miles in about 5.5 hours!

Hi Garth,
I know what you mean. Just looking at my pics, the dark grey seems quite a
bit lighter in some shots, and more like what it really looks like in
others. It's a dark steelish grey and not dull at all in real life...quite
attractive, especially when set against the kidney bean red wit
