The rubbing I was getting with the longer flap was the side stays
rubbing the tire. On that bike, the tires were usually Marathon
Duremes 700x40. Realized it was the extra leverage of the longer flap
that caused the kerfuffle. Once changed, it was not an issue.

Eric, where did you experience the rubbing, or flapping, if you will? On my
bike, it's not the flap itself which seems to rub the tire, but where the
end of the fender meets the flap. As the road gets rough, this area seems
to strike the sides of my tires, which causes an annoying "tt, zzztt
Same here. Part of the problem is the flexibility, and part of it is due to
the narrow clearance at the flap. Planet Bike's Cascadia fenders allow for
more clearance, and are far more rigid, but don't have the coverage of the
Longboards. Narrower tires will help with flap slap, but the inhere
We have them on my wife's 61cm Atlantis with 700x40's with no issues. Also had
a set on her 61cm Roadeo with no problems.
We have found them to work well. Sorry to hear your having issues. I have no
idea why yours are rubbing.

Those long flappy things do look pretty chunky and heavy. Maybe the fender
splats are better?
