To add to JohnS's response, in this specific case, brass, being the "more noble" of the metals (see Wiki on Galvanic Corrosion) is causing the degredation of the "less noble" of the metals. The more distant the metals are on the Galvanic Chart the more likely the reaction. So, for example the
