I too was torn between the mini-front and the two-strut top rack, but
I ultimately went with the mini-front on my Quickbeam. I think the
main point that sold me on the mini-front was the aforementioned
brazing of the stays, as opposed to the bolt-on style of the top rack.

I've got the Honjo 45s on my Hilsen 700c. They are long, and I have them
back a bit more than yours. No problems - just watch the curb drops - pull
up on the bars a bit...

Thanks all for the encouraging words. To answer some of these questions:
@ Thomas: the cream head tube is not standard. I knew from the beginning it
was an extra expense that I was going to spring for. Riv luckily had an
unpainted 48cm frame in stock which knocked down the price a little...
I find this an interesting approach, do you also have it attached to
the fork crown using the daruma or a tab?

Very nice setup.
Historically I have tended to have more cargo weight in the rear than
in the front on my bike. However, lately I've been mixing it up more.
And sometimes going with heavy front weighting.
One thing I've been very pleased about is that the Hillborne just
plain doesn't seem to care
Yet another quintessential Rivendell! Beautiful set-up Adam. Glad you
went with the Nitto rack. I love and trust Nitto products. I feel
they're worth the cost.

The Nitto Mini Front does have a threaded boss on the underside of the
rack platform. I drilled out my fender there and attached it. It
looks like Adam might want to use a spacer at that spot to maintain
his fender lines.
FWIW, the Mark's Rack does not have that threaded boss on the

Hey Adam,
Does the Mini Front rack attach to your front fender?

Hi all,
Thank you all for your input on front rack compatibility with a canti-
brake bike. I now have a Nitto mini front rack (and Honjo fenders)
mounted on my ride (see link to photos). The Nitto just looks
impeccably made, with nicer welds than the VO, if that counts for
anything (I'm not sure

Don't forget Tubus in stainless still. Tubus might be stronger or more

Adam,
I ride a Bombadil and currently have a Mark's rack on the front,
and a Two Strut model I have yet to replace it with. I had to very
slightly bend the two shortest struts on the Marks rack t oclear my
canti's when open, and will have to do the same with the Two Strut
one. My canti's are
I've been eyeballing low rider front racks.
For the first couple of years Rivendell sold the Nitto Campee with the
bolt on low riders, and had a simple low rider only with hoop in
development (Reader 15, page 13) but at some point decided to eschew
the low and go high. I wonder what made them see
I have the Nitto Mini (which I love)... It looks awesome, has
beautiful welds and finish, and it's STRONG... Nicest front rack I've
ever owned. I think this is THE rack to get if it fits your setup,
and you're planning to stick with the same bike. If you plan to
switch it to different bikes (or p
I was not impressed with a VO rack I installed on a customer's bicycle. The
welds were ugly, everything was out of alignment, the finish was not
anywhere near that of a Nitto, and the piece that attaches to the fork crown
was flimsy and sure to fail eventually. I'm sure it would perform just fine

I have both. The platforms are identical. Somewhere in my flickr stream are
photos of each one.

I'll second this request. Do the vo racks line up with the rvindell

Not to hijack this thread, but how do the VO's in stainless steel
compare to the Nittos in cro-mo in design and quality? They seem
pretty similar in photos and VOs are half to two-thirds the price.

Go with the Mini. It's a great rack, and mine has carried well over 30 lbs

get a cantilever bike, IMO.

salt, but despite the double struts I
